The cold start

A warm engine is a polite one. It has thermal expansion on its side, oil where oil should be, and a fuel system that has stopped compensating for anything. Almost everything an engine is hiding, it hides best at operating temperature — which is why the ninety seconds after a night of sitting are the most informative ninety seconds you will get.

First, the part that decides whether any of this works: the car has to actually be cold. Not "they drove it around the block an hour ago" cold. Sat overnight, engine at the same temperature as the air around it.

There is a reason cars are frequently running when you arrive, and it is not always sinister — plenty of sellers are just being hospitable. It does not matter why. Put the back of your hand on the hood before anything else. Warm hood, reschedule. Ask for the car to be left untouched from the night before and come at the appointment time. A seller who cannot accommodate that on a car they want to sell has given you information for free.

What follows is a protocol, not a checklist — the order and the timing are the whole point. Start a stopwatch. Stand outside the car for the first part if you can, or better, bring somebody and split the job: one in the driver's seat, one at the back of the car watching the tailpipe.

Look at the ground

Whatever has dripped overnight is on the pavement right now, in position, and it will be gone within a minute of the engine starting and the wind moving. Note where it is relative to the car: front center, under a wheel, mid-chassis. Touch it. Color and texture are the whole diagnosis, and we have written out what each fluid looks like separately.

Then the hood, with the back of your hand, to confirm cold. Then open it and leave it open — you want to hear this engine without a steel lid over it.

The bulb check

Turn the key to the run position without cranking, and watch the instrument cluster. Warning lamps are supposed to illuminate and then go out, which is how the car proves the bulbs work. A lamp that never lights at all is the one to notice — an airbag or check-engine lamp that stays dark through the bulb check has often been removed or disabled, and that is a deliberate act.

In the same four seconds, listen for the fuel pump: a short whir from behind you that stops on its own. Silence there is a finding on most modern cars.

How long, and how evenly

Count the revolutions before it fires. A healthy engine catches quickly and evenly. Extended cranking on a cold engine points at fuel pressure, a battery that is tired, or compression. A crank that sounds uneven — fast, slow, fast — is worth writing down.

One slow, labored crank followed by a normal start usually means a battery or a connection, which is cheap. Repeat it later in the visit after the car has sat again for a few minutes, because a good alternator will have hidden the problem by then.

The tailpipe, and the first noise

This is the window your second person is for. On a cold morning a puff of white vapor that dissipates fast is condensed water and means nothing. White smoke that hangs in the air, keeps coming, and carries a sweet smell is a different thing entirely. Blue-tinged smoke is oil. A black puff is a rich mixture.

Inside, the tachometer should jump to a fast idle and hold it. Listen for anything that arrives in the first second or two and then fades — a brief rattle or a diesel-like clatter at startup that goes quiet is a common pattern and is often discussed in terms of oil pressure reaching the top of the engine or a chain tensioner filling. What it means on a specific engine is a question for that engine's service information and a technician, not for a general article. Note it, time it, ask about it.

Does the idle come down smoothly?

Most engines idle high when cold and walk down as they warm. You are watching the shape of that descent. Smooth and continuous is what you want. Hunting — the tach rising and falling repeatedly on its own — is an air or fuel metering issue. A stumble or a near-stall as it comes down is worth noting even if the car recovers.

With the hood open, this is also when belts declare themselves. A squeal that appears at start and clears as things warm is usually a belt or a tensioner. A chirp that stays is a bearing in something the belt drives.

Stop looking and just listen

Twenty-five seconds of doing nothing else. Ticking that fades as oil circulates is common; ticking that is still there at a minute is not finished. A rhythmic knock that speeds up with engine speed is the sound nobody wants and the reason for this whole protocol. Exhaust ticking at the front of the engine that is loudest when cold and quieter when hot is typically a manifold leak, because the crack closes as the metal expands.

Smell, too. This is peak evidence for most of the odors worth catching, because cold engines leak where warm ones have sealed themselves shut.

The dashboard, again, and the ground, again

Come back to the cluster. Everything that was meant to extinguish after the bulb check should be out by now. Anything still lit at ninety seconds is a live fault, and you can stop treating it as a bulb.

Then walk the car once, slowly, and look at the ground underneath while it is running. Some leaks only present with the system pressurized, which is to say they are invisible in the driveway photo and obvious here.

Last, put the heat on full and the fan on high. In the first two minutes you are not judging how hot the air is — the engine has not made heat yet — you are listening to the blower for bearing noise and debris, and smelling what comes out of the vents on the first air the car has moved all night.

What to do with all of it

Write it down before you drive. A cold-start observation degrades fast in memory, and the test drive is about to overwrite it with new impressions — which is precisely why the drive comes second and gets a route of its own. Then, if the car is a serious candidate, arrange for a mechanic to see it cold too. Anything on this page that you noticed and could not explain is exactly what to hand them, because "it rattled for two seconds at startup, here is my stopwatch" is a far better brief than "can you look it over."

How we handle it

Six cars at a time means we can do something a bigger lot structurally cannot: every car here gets started cold, by somebody who is paying attention, on more than one morning before it is offered. What that catches goes onto the published inspection sheet in the same words we would use to each other. And if you want to be the one standing there at eight in the morning when it happens, call ahead and we will leave the car alone until you get here. Nobody has ever asked us that and been told no.

This protocol describes general observation technique for gasoline passenger cars and is not a diagnosis. Startup behavior varies by engine design, fuel type, ambient temperature and altitude; hybrids and electric vehicles behave differently again. Anything you notice should be confirmed by a qualified technician with access to the manufacturer's service information for that vehicle.
