Fluids: what the color means
A car runs on six or seven liquids, and most of them change appearance as they age in a way you can read without any tools at all. This is the chart — fresh to finished, fluid by fluid — along with the two cases where color tells you nothing and people act on it anyway.
Two methods before the chart. The paper towel test: put a drop from the dipstick onto a white paper towel and let it spread for thirty seconds. Color separates from opacity, and grit shows up as speckles at the edge of the spread where you would never see it on a dipstick. The driveway map: a drip's position under the car narrows the candidates before you have looked at it — front center is engine, a foot back of that is transmission on most front-drive cars, behind a wheel is brake fluid, and the clear puddle mid-car on a hot day is the air conditioning doing its job.
Swatches below are approximations for reading on a screen. Fluid appearance varies with the product, the additive package and the light you hold it in.
Engine oil
Dipstick · front center of the car
Oil darkens because it is doing its job — holding combustion byproducts in suspension. Dark alone is not a verdict. What matters more is texture: oil should feel slippery between finger and thumb, not gritty, and it should not smell of gasoline.
Automatic transmission fluid

The smell test outranks the color here. Fluid that has been overheated smells acrid and scorched, and that smell means clutch material has been cooking. Dark and odorless is tired. Dark and burnt is a transmission with a history.
Do not assume red. Plenty of modern transmissions use fluids that are blue, amber or nearly clear, and plenty of cars have no dipstick at all — checking them requires a lift, a specific temperature and a fill procedure. Which fluid a given car takes and how to check it is in that vehicle's service information, and using the wrong one is an expensive mistake rather than a minor one.
Coolant

This is the fluid where color is most often misread. Coolant is dyed by the manufacturer to distinguish formulations, and the dye color does not reliably tell you which formulation you are looking at — different makers have used the same color for different chemistries and different colors for equivalent ones. What your car takes is specified in its owner's manual or service information, and that is the only source worth trusting. Mixing incompatible coolants can gel them.
What you can read is condition, and here the chart looks different:
Whatever color it started as, coolant should be translucent and bright. Cloudy, silty, rust-tinted or carrying a film is a finding. An oily sheen on the reservoir is the coolant-side version of milky oil and means the same question gets asked.
Brake fluid

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air over time, which lowers its boiling point and corrodes the system from inside. Darkening is a rough proxy for that, not a measurement. Moisture content is tested with a fluid tester or test strips, and the threshold at which it should be replaced, along with the fluid specification and any service interval, is set by the vehicle manufacturer — look it up for that car rather than applying a general rule.
Gear oil and differential fluid

You will usually meet this one by smell before sight — many gear oils carry a strong sulfur note that is distinctive and unforgettable. Metallic glitter suspended in it is the finding that matters: that is the gears themselves. A fine gray sheen on a magnetic drain plug is normal wear; visible flakes are not.
Power steering fluid

Two different fluid families, both normal, depending on the car — and the wrong one damages seals, so this is another manual-not-memory question. Many newer cars have electric power steering and no fluid at all. Dark and burnt-smelling fluid usually means the pump has been feeding its own wear back into the system, and a groan at full lock is the matching symptom.
The two that are not problems
Under the middle of the car, usually on a hot day
The clear puddle under a car that has been running the air conditioning is water pulled out of the cabin air, and it is the single most common cause of unnecessary alarm in a parking lot. Washer fluid is dyed in various colors and leaks from a reservoir or a cracked line; it is a five-minute annoyance.
The way to tell any clear drip apart from something serious is to touch it. Water is thin and evaporates. Everything else on this page leaves a film on your fingers.
What we check, and what we write down
Every car here gets all of this looked at on intake, and the findings go onto the published inspection sheet in plain language — fluid condition, where any leak is, and whether we fixed it or priced it in. We also leave the car's own fluids in it rather than doing a cosmetic flush before a showing, because a bright red dipstick on a car with an otherwise neglected history is a misleading thing to hand somebody. If the transmission fluid is dark, we would rather tell you that and tell you what we think it means.
Swatch colors are screen approximations for identification, not a standard. Fluid specifications, capacities, service intervals and replacement thresholds are vehicle-specific — confirm them in the owner's manual or manufacturer service information, or with a qualified technician. Never mix coolant formulations or substitute a fluid type based on color alone. Used automotive fluids are hazardous; dispose of them properly.
