Dashboard lights, ranked

Not by how alarming the icon looks, and not by color. By how much damage the next ten minutes of driving will do. Some warnings mean finish your errand and book an appointment. Two of them mean get off the road before you finish the block.

Read this first. Warning symbols, their colors and their exact behavior differ between manufacturers, models and years, and some cars combine several functions into one lamp or replace lamps with text messages. The only authoritative source for your car is its owner's manual — worth five minutes in the driveway before you need it. What follows is a general ranking by consequence, not a decoding of any specific cluster.

Service reminders, washer fluid, bulb-out indicators

Finish the drive. Finish the week.

These are not faults. A maintenance reminder is a counter that reached a number somebody programmed into it; it knows nothing about the condition of your oil. A washer lamp is a float switch. A bulb-out indicator is useful and not urgent.

Why here: nothing is failing. Something is due.

Tire pressure monitoring, steady

Check the pressures at the next stop.

The commonest cause is a cold morning — air contracts, pressure drops, the system notices. The second is a slow leak. Put a gauge on all four and compare to the placard on the driver's door jamb, not the number on the sidewall, which is a maximum rather than a recommendation.

Why here: it is almost always trivial, and the same check catches the time it is not. If the lamp arrives with a change in how the car steers, this stops being rank two — pull over and look at the tire.

Check engine, steady

Drive it. Get it scanned this week.

A steady check-engine lamp means the engine management system has stored a fault and, in most cases, has decided the car is still safe to operate. It covers an enormous range — a loose gas cap and a failing sensor illuminate the same lamp.

Get the codes read — most shops will do it, and a code is a starting point rather than a diagnosis. A stored fault also has implications for emissions inspection, and clearing the code resets the car's readiness monitors, which is its own problem. What New Jersey requires at inspection is a question for the Motor Vehicle Commission.

Why here: low immediate risk, high probability of becoming expensive if ignored for months.

ABS, traction control, stability control

Drive gently. Book it now.

These systems intervene at the limit — a hard stop, ice, a skid. With one disabled, the car behaves normally right up until the moment you needed it, which is a nasty property for a fault to have.

On most vehicles the conventional hydraulic brakes still work with ABS disabled, but verify that in your own car's manual rather than assume it. Meanwhile, drive as though the car has none: brake earlier, leave room, stay off it in rain or snow.

Why here: it costs you nothing today and everything on the one day it matters.

Airbag / SRS

The car is fine. You are not.

This is the rank people argue with, because an SRS lamp changes nothing about how the car drives. That is the problem. A restraint system with a stored fault may not deploy, or may have a disabled component you cannot identify from the driver's seat.

On a car you are considering buying, it moves higher still. An SRS fault can point at a previous deployment and repair, a seat sensor, or corrosion in a connector under a seat where water has been. It is one of the few lamps that is also a history report.

Why here: zero effect on the drive, maximum effect on the second that matters.

Battery / charging system

You are on a countdown. Drive somewhere useful.

This lamp does not mean the battery is low. It generally means the charging system has stopped replacing what the car uses, so everything from here runs on what is stored — a finite and surprisingly short amount of driving.

Turn off what you can — heated seats, blower, audio — and do not stop anywhere you cannot be recovered from, because you may not restart. Head home or to a shop rather than finishing the errand.

Why here: nothing is being destroyed, but the car is going to stop and you get to choose where.

Check engine, flashing

Reduce load. Get off the road soon.

A flashing check-engine lamp is conventionally more severe than a steady one, and is commonly associated with a misfire sending unburned fuel into the exhaust, where it can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter. Confirm what flashing means on your vehicle in the owner's manual — but treat it as the urgent version regardless.

Ease off, avoid loads and hills, and stop as soon as you safely can. A converter costs a great deal more than whatever caused the misfire.

Why here: every additional mile can be adding to the repair bill in real time.

Brake warning lamp

Test the pedal now. Be ready to stop.

Three very different things commonly share this lamp: the parking brake being engaged, low brake fluid, and a hydraulic fault. Rule out the first immediately. If it is not that, the lamp is about the braking system itself.

At the first safe opportunity, press the pedal firmly while stationary. A pedal that sinks under steady pressure, or travels further than it used to, means stop driving and call for a tow. Low fluid often just means the pads have worn far enough to drop the reservoir level — a different and measurable conversation, covered in reading brake wear.

Why here: the benign explanations are common, and the one bad explanation is the worst failure a car has.

Coolant temperature / overheating

Pull over. Shut it off. Do not open the cap.

Aluminum engines do not tolerate being hot. Heads warp, gaskets fail, and the distance between "the gauge is climbing" and "this engine is finished" is minutes rather than miles.

Turn the heat to full — it pulls some heat out of the coolant — and use that to reach somewhere safe, then shut it down. Let it cool completely before anyone opens anything; a pressurized cooling system at temperature will scald.

Why here: the damage is continuous, rapid and usually terminal for the engine.

Oil pressure

Stop now. Not at the next exit. Now.

This is the top of the ladder and nothing else is close. An oil pressure warning means the engine may not be receiving pressurized oil, and the bearings inside it survive on a film of oil that is measured in microns. Without it, they are metal on metal at thousands of revolutions per minute.

Pull over safely and shut the engine off. Not to a shop, not home because home is close. Adding oil may or may not address the cause, and running the engine is not how you find out. This is a tow, every time.

Why here: it is the only lamp where the cost of being wrong is the entire engine, and it can happen in the time it takes to find a parking space.

The lamp that is not on

One more, and it matters most when you are shopping. Turn the key to run without starting the engine and watch the cluster do its bulb check. Every warning lamp should light, then go out.

A lamp that never lights at all — most often check-engine or airbag — has frequently been removed, taped over or disabled. That is not a fault; it is a decision somebody made about what you would find out, and it should make you far more careful about everything else on the car. The full sequence is in the cold start.

What we do with lit dashboards

Cars arrive here with a light on fairly often — frequently that is why they were traded. We scan, diagnose, and either fix it or do not retail the car. What we will not do is clear a code and park it on the front row: the readiness monitors give that away to the next person with a scan tool, and a car needing a reset to look presentable belongs at auction with the condition disclosed.

General guidance, not a diagnosis. Symbol meanings, colors and behaviors are manufacturer-specific — confirm them in the owner's manual for your vehicle. Inspection and emissions requirements are set by the state; verify with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. When in doubt, stop somewhere safe and call a qualified technician.
