What each noise means
Organized the way you actually experience it — by when the sound happens, not by which part makes it. Every entry lists more than one possible cause, because every one of them genuinely has more than one, and any page that hands you a single answer is selling you something.
Two things make car noises hard to diagnose. The first is that a car body is a resonator: sound travels through metal and mounts and arrives at your ears from a direction that has very little to do with where it started. A noise that seems to be at the right rear is often at the left front. The second is that symptoms converge — several unrelated failures produce a clunk over a bump, and they are not distinguishable by description.
So use this as a way to narrow the question and to decide how quickly to ask it, not as a diagnosis. The useful discipline is to note four things before you call anyone: when it happens, whether it changes with engine speed or with road speed, whether it changes when you brake or steer, and whether it is there when the car is cold and gone when it's warm.
In the first seconds after start-up
Cold, with oil pressure still building and everything at ambient temperature.
A short, hard rattle that clears after a second or two
This weekClassic complaint of a timing chain tensioner that bleeds down overnight and takes a moment to refill with oil pressure — but far from the only cause.

Sitting in Park with nothing else happening — the quietest diagnostic environment you have, and the easiest to use.
A steady tick that rises and falls with engine speed
This weekNote that direct-injection engines tick audibly by design — injectors are noisy — so on those cars the question is whether the sound has changed, not whether it exists.

A hiss or whistle you can hear over the engine

A light metallic scrape that stops when you brake
This weekMany brake pads carry a small metal tab designed to contact the rotor and squeal when the friction material gets low — pressing the pedal pushes it clear, which is why the noise disappears exactly when you'd expect it to get worse.

Grinding, metal on metal, felt through the pedal
Stop drivingFriction material is gone and something structural is contacting the rotor. Every additional stop is damaging parts and lengthening the repair.

A rhythmic pulsing you feel more than hear
This weekPulsation that arrives with the brake pedal is usually about rotor thickness variation or deposits rather than a "warped" disc, whatever the shorthand says.

When you steer
Clicking or knocking on a tight, slow turn
This weekRhythmic with wheel rotation, worse at full lock, usually only turning one way. Very often an outer constant-velocity joint whose boot split some time ago and lost its grease.

A groan or whine while turning at low speed

A hollow clunk or rattle from one corner
This weekThe hardest noise on this page to pin down, and the one most often chased with the wrong parts. A shop with a pry bar and a lift will find in ten minutes what a driver can guess at for months.

A continued float or wallow after the bump
Book itNot strictly a noise, but the same cause and worth recording: dampers that have stopped damping let the car keep moving after the road has stopped asking it to. They also scallop the tires as they go.

The key distinction in this whole reference: does the pitch follow the speedometer or the tachometer? Put it in neutral and coast — if the noise keeps going while the engine drops, it follows the road.
A hum or growl that builds with speed, sometimes changing when you sway the car
This weekA load-sensitive hum — louder with weight shifted onto one side by a gentle lane change — points strongly at a bearing on the loaded side. But worn tires imitate this almost perfectly, so read the tread before anyone quotes you.

A whine that follows engine speed even in neutral
This weekIf it stays with the tachometer when you coast, it belongs to something the engine turns rather than something the road turns.

Ticking, hissing, and a fan that keeps running
Book itMostly normal: hot metal contracting, coolant settling, a cooling fan finishing its job. It stops being normal when there's a smell of coolant, a drip, or a fan that runs for a very long time after a gentle drive — which is a different article.

How to hand this to a mechanic
The most useful thing you can do is stop trying to name the part. Say when it happens, what changes it, and what doesn't. "Hum from around the front, gets louder above forty, goes away when I ease left and comes back when I ease right, same whether I'm on or off the throttle" is worth more than an hour of a technician's guessing, and it costs you one attentive drive.
Better still, ride along. A noise you can reproduce in the passenger seat with the person who is going to fix it is a noise that gets fixed once instead of three times.
How we handle it here. Every car we take in gets driven with the windows down and the radio off, cold and then warm, before anything else happens to it. Noises that we find and fix appear as reconditioning line items in the published 168-point inspection; noises we found, investigated and judged normal get written down as exactly that, because that is more useful to a buyer than silence.
