Panel gaps and overspray
A factory builds a car with robots, fixtures and a tolerance sheet. A body shop rebuilds part of it with a person, a socket set and an afternoon. Both can produce something that looks right from ten feet. The difference lives in about eight places, and this is what each of them looks like both ways.
Before the pairs, one honest caveat that should color everything below. None of these findings proves anything on its own. Panel gaps vary from the factory, doors get adjusted for wind noise, a bumper cover gets repainted because of a parking lot. What you are building is a pattern. Three findings in the same corner of the car is a conclusion; one finding anywhere is a question.
Do this in daylight, ideally overcast, and crouch so your eye is level with each shut line rather than above it.
The hood-to-fender gap
Both sides, front to back, eye level
The gap runs parallel from the headlight to the windshield. It may not be narrow — plenty of cars leave the plant with generous shut lines — but the two edges stay the same distance apart the whole way, and the left side matches the right side.
The gap tapers: tight at the windshield, opening toward the headlight, or the reverse. Or one side of the car is visibly different from the other. Or the hood sits proud of the fender at one corner so you can feel a step with a fingertip.
What it means: a hood was removed and reinstalled, or a fender was replaced, or something moved that holds them both. The taper points at the end that was disturbed.
Body lines across a shut line
Door to fender, door to quarter, anywhere a crease crosses a gap
The character line — the crease pressed into the sheet metal — arrives at the gap and continues on the other side at the same height. Sight down the side of the car from the front corner and the line is one line.
The crease steps up or down across the gap, or softens on one panel and sharpens on the next. Reflections help: a straight overhead edge — a roofline, a light pole — reflected along the flank should not kink where two panels meet.
What it means: this is the single most reliable alignment tell, because a crease is much harder to fake than a gap width.
Bolt heads in the jamb and under the hood

Every bolt head wears the same paint as the metal around it, applied at the same time, with no break in the film at the edges of the head. On many cars there is also a factory paint dab or marker line that is unbroken.
Paint on a bolt head is cracked in a ring where a socket turned it, or the head is scarred bright, or one bolt is clean and its three neighbors are dirty. A bolt painted body color after assembly — smooth, glossy, too perfect — is the opposite tell.
What it means: that panel came off. Not necessarily after a crash — but it came off, and that is a question worth asking out loud.
Overspray on rubber
Door weatherstrip, trunk seal, window rubbers, wiper arms
Weatherstrip is a flat, slightly chalky black along its whole length. Run a finger along it; it feels like rubber. The paint stops cleanly where the metal stops.
A faint satin sheen or a grainy texture on the rubber, or speckles of body color caught in it. Look where the seal meets the bottom corner of the jamb — masking is hardest there and that is where it gets abandoned.
What it means: paint was sprayed with that seal in place. Overspray does not tell you the size of the repair. It tells you a repair happened here and was not done to factory standard.
Seam sealer
Inside the door jambs, under the trunk carpet, along the firewall
Factory sealer is consistent — same width, same bead, same direction, often with a repeated tooling pattern because a machine put it there. Compare the left jamb to the right one: they should look like the same beads.
A bead that is smeared, fingered, or a different color than its counterpart across the car. Or a seam that is suspiciously smooth and sealer-free where the other side has a bead.
What it means: welded structure was separated and resealed. Of everything on this page, this is the finding that most often sits over real structural work.
Paint texture and color, panel to panel
Best seen in shade, then again with light raking across the panel
The surface texture — the faint stipple people call orange peel — is the same on every panel, including the ones nobody photographs. Color matches across shut lines from every angle you stand at.
One panel is glassier or coarser than its neighbors. Or the color matches head-on and separates when you move — metallic and pearl finishes flip differently when the flake is laid down by a different gun.
What it means: refinishing. Confirm it with a coating gauge, which turns this from an impression into a number — how to take the readings.
Glass markings
The small etched block in a bottom corner of each window
Every piece of glass carries a manufacturer's mark and a set of codes. On an untouched car they generally all come from the same maker and share a consistent date notation.
One window from a different manufacturer, or one whose date notation sits noticeably apart from the rest of the car's.
What it means: that glass was replaced — which is frequently just a rock on the Turnpike. It earns its place here because glass notation systems differ by maker, so do not try to decode a date from memory; note the mismatch, and ask.
Clips, liners and undertrays

Every clip location has a clip in it. The liner sits flush. Fasteners look alike because they came from the same parts bin on the same day.
Empty clip holes, a screw where a push-pin belongs, a zip tie, a liner with a torn mounting ear. One area of the car with mixed hardware and the rest uniform.
What it means: that corner has been apart. It is the least glamorous item on this list and frequently the most honest, because nobody details the inside of a wheel arch before a showing.
Putting the pattern together
Walk the car once for gaps at eye level, once for reflections along the flank, then open every door, the hood and the trunk and look inside the shut lines. That order matters: the outside tells you where to look, the jambs tell you what happened.
And then hold your findings loosely. A repaired car is not a bad car. A properly repaired quarter panel with a blended trunk lid can be structurally perfect and cosmetically excellent, and it may be why the car is priced where it is. What you are protecting yourself against is the other version — where the work is real, the evidence is right there in the jamb, and nobody mentioned it because they were hoping you would not crouch.
Our side of it
We go through this on every car we buy, before we buy it, with a gauge in one hand. When we find work, it goes on the inspection sheet with the location named: refinished right front fender, overspray on the door seal, hood off at some point. Six cars at a time means there is no version of this we could plausibly get away with hiding, and honestly, disclosing it is easier. The buyer who crouches down and finds the thing we already wrote on the sheet tends to relax. The one who finds something we did not write down never does, and they are right not to.
These pairs describe general assembly and refinishing characteristics; factory tolerances, sealer patterns, glass sourcing and fastener finishes vary by manufacturer, plant and model year. Nothing here identifies collision damage on its own. Structural assessment requires a qualified body technician with the vehicle on a lift and access to the manufacturer's specifications.
