Paint depth and what it tells you

A coating gauge is a small magnet on a spring with a readout, and it is the closest thing to a lie detector that a used car buyer can hold. It does not tell you whether a car was in an accident. It tells you which panels have been painted twice, which is a different and more useful fact.

The measurement is thickness of everything sitting on top of the metal — primer, sealer, color, clear, and anything a body shop added underneath. It is read in mils, thousandths of an inch, or in microns depending on the gauge. The instrument is cheap now. The skill is not in the reading; it is in what you compare the reading to.

Here is the thing most guides get wrong. They print a "normal factory range" and tell you to flag anything above it. We are not going to do that, because there is no such number. Coating thickness varies by manufacturer, by assembly plant, by model year, by color, by whether the panel is steel or aluminum or plastic, and by whether it is a horizontal surface or a vertical one. A figure that is unremarkable on one car is an obvious repair on another.

So you do not compare a panel to a published number. You compare it to the rest of its own car. Every reading below exists only to show you what a spread looks like.

Taking the readings

  1. Zero the gauge first

    Most gauges come with a bare steel plate and a set of shims. Zero on the plate, verify against a shim, and do it on site rather than at home. Temperature affects these instruments, and a gauge that has been in a cold car needs a minute.

  2. Clean the spot

    Wax, road film and a dusty panel all add thickness the gauge cannot tell from paint. A microfiber and a quick wipe is enough. Take readings on clean, dry, flat areas.

  3. Five readings per panel, not one

    Center, both ends, near the top edge, near the bottom seam. Paint is not uniform even from the factory — it is thinner at edges and heavier where gravity had a say. A single reading is noise.

  4. Write them down

    On your phone, on a card, anywhere. You are building a sheet, and the sheet is the analysis. Doing this from memory across twelve panels is how people talk themselves out of an obvious finding.

  5. Do the whole car, including the roof

    The roof is the panel people skip and it is the one that establishes your baseline most reliably, because it is the hardest panel to repair casually. Do both quarter panels, both doors each side, the hood, the trunk lid, and the fenders.

  6. Read the spread, not the number

    Line the readings up. On an unrepaired car they cluster. One panel standing well outside its neighbors is the finding, whatever the absolute figures happen to be.

Reading: the left rear corner has been refinished and the left quarter has material under the paint. The bar is capped at the edge of the track — the actual figure is off the scale of the other panels, which is itself the point. Note that the repair fades into the trunk lid: that is a blend, and blends tell you where the work stopped.

What a mismatch actually means

Take the findings in order of how much they tell you.

A little high on one panel. Could be a repaint of a scratch, could be factory variation, could be a spot repair before delivery. Worth a question, not worth alarm.

Clearly high on one panel, ordinary on its neighbors. That panel was refinished. It does not say why. A shopping-cart dent and a collision produce the same reading.

High on adjacent panels with a gradient between them. The shop blended the color across a seam. The gradient maps the work: whatever was fixed sits at the thick end.

Several times the car's own baseline. That is usually body filler under the paint. The gauge will often refuse to read at all over deep filler, which is also informative.

No reading at all. Either the panel is aluminum or plastic and your gauge is magnetic-only, or there is too much non-metal between the probe and steel. Know which of your car's panels are aluminum before you draw any conclusion — hoods and doors are aluminum on plenty of ordinary cars now.

Four things it cannot tell you

It cannot tell you whether the underlying damage was structural. A quarter panel with heavy filler might sit on a perfectly straight body, and a car with uniform paint everywhere might have had a frame rail pulled and the panels replaced with new pre-primed parts. It cannot tell you when the work was done. It cannot tell you who did it or how well. And it cannot tell you whether the repair was ever claimed, which is why a clean report and a suspicious sheet are not a contradiction — reports only know what someone filed.

What it does, reliably, is direct your attention. A gauge reading that lights up the left rear tells you where to look for the rest of the story: panel gaps, overspray inside the jamb, bolt heads with their paint cracked, a sealer bead that does not match the factory pattern. What we do with ours

We gauge every car we take in, we write the readings on the inspection sheet, and where a panel reads high we say so on the window — refinished left quarter, blended into the trunk lid, and here is what we found when we looked underneath. Repaired panels are not disqualifying. Roughly every used car on earth has had something painted. Quietly hoping you do not own a gauge is the part we object to.
