Reading used engine oil

A dipstick and a clean rag give you the only direct look inside an engine you will get without taking something apart. It takes twenty seconds, most buyers skip it, and about half of what people think they know about reading it is wrong — starting with the idea that dark oil is bad oil.

Take the reading properly first

A bad reading is worse than no reading, because you will act on it.

  1. Level ground. A sloped driveway moves the level in the pan by more than you'd expect, and the marks on the stick assume level.
  2. Engine off, then wait. Oil needs a few minutes to drain back down from the top of the engine. Checking immediately after shutdown reads low.
  3. Pull, wipe, reinsert all the way, pull again. The first pull is contaminated by oil splashed up the tube. The second one is the reading.
  4. Look at both sides of the stick. They frequently disagree; read the lower of the two.
  5. Check what your car actually wants. Some manufacturers specify a cold check, others a warm one, and a growing number of cars have no dipstick at all and report the level through a dashboard menu instead. The owner's manual for that vehicle is the authority on which applies.

Before the colors: what color isn't

Oil darkens in normal service, and on some engines it darkens very quickly. That is largely the detergent and dispersant additives doing exactly what they were designed to do — holding combustion byproducts in suspension so they circulate harmlessly instead of settling out as deposits. Oil that stays amber is not necessarily oil that's working. A direct-injection gasoline engine will blacken fresh oil within a few hundred miles, and a diesel will do it almost immediately.

So darkness on its own is not a verdict. What matters is darkness combined with other things: no service records, a low level, a burnt smell, grit between your fingers. One observation is a data point. Three that agree is a picture.

The reverse trap is worth naming too. Fresh oil on a car that's for sale tells you almost nothing, and occasionally it is there precisely so that it tells you nothing. The useful follow-up isn't "is the oil clean" but "when was it changed, and may I see the receipt."

The swatches

Approximations of what a wiped dipstick looks like against a rag. Real oil in real light varies; use these as a starting vocabulary rather than a color standard.

Clear amber, translucent

Fresh or nearly fresh. You can see the metal of the stick through the film. Some oils are dyed and start out slightly different in tone, which is cosmetic.

What to doNothing — but on a car for sale, find out how recently it was changed before you read anything into it.

Light to medium brown

Oil in ordinary service. Still translucent at the edges of the film, slightly darker in the body. This is the normal middle of an oil's life.

What to doNote the level and move on. This is the most common reading on a well-kept car.

Dark brown to black, still smooth

Late in the interval, or normal for that engine. The important word is smooth: still slick between finger and thumb, with no grain and no thickening. On a direct-injection or diesel engine this appears early and means very little.

What to doJudge it against the records, not against the color. Black plus a receipt from last month is a different car than black plus nothing.

Milky tan, like coffee with too much cream

Water in the oil. The two common causes are very different: condensation from repeated short trips in cold weather, which is benign and extremely common on the underside of an oil cap, or coolant entering the oil through a failed gasket or a cracked casting, which is not.

The distinction that matters is where you see it. Emulsion under the filler cap alone, in a New Jersey January, on a car that does four-mile trips, is usually condensation. The same emulsion down the whole dipstick, with the oil level up and the coolant level down, is a different conversation.

What to doCheck the coolant level and the oil level together. If both are abnormal, stop and get it diagnosed before any money moves. If only the cap is affected, note it, take a long drive, and look again.

Tilt the stick under a light and look for a fine sparkle. Suspended metal means something inside is wearing faster than the oil can hide — bearings, or a component grinding itself into the supply.

What to doWalk, or get a professional diagnosis before anything else happens. This is the reading on this page that should end a test drive rather than start a negotiation.

Pink or rust-tinged, sometimes frothy

Coolant is often dyed, and when it emulsifies into oil it can carry its color with it. A pink or reddish cast, or foam that doesn't settle, points at coolant intrusion — and on a car with an automatic transmission cooler routed through the radiator, it can also point at the two fluids having found each other there.

What to doTreat it like the milky reading, but with less benefit of the doubt. Diagnosis first.

Normal-looking, but thin — and it smells of fuel

The one you read with your nose and your fingers rather than your eyes. Fuel dilution thins the oil while leaving the color broadly ordinary, and the level rises rather than falls. It's most associated with short-trip driving, with direct injection, and with diesels running frequent regenerations — all covered in the diesel piece.

What to doNote the level against the full mark. Oil above full on a car nobody just overfilled is a finding, and it's worth raising with a mechanic.

Thick, tarry, granular

Oil that has stopped being a liquid in any useful sense. It drags on the stick, it smells scorched, and it may leave a varnish you can see on the metal. This is the end state of long neglect, overheating, or both — and it will have been coking oil passages and turbo feed lines the whole time it looked like this.

What to doThis is a condition report on the whole car, not just the oil. Whatever else the seller tells you about maintenance is now in doubt.

The three readings that aren't color

Level. Low tells you the engine consumes or leaks, and that nobody has been topping it up. High tells you it was overfilled — a crankshaft whipping oil into foam is not a lubricant — or that something is reaching the sump that shouldn't.

Smell. Oil should smell like oil. Sharp and acrid means it's been cooked. Like diesel or gasoline means fuel is getting past the rings. Sweet means coolant.

Feel. Rub a drop between finger and thumb. It should be slippery and consistent. Any grain or grit is particulate that got past the filter — the one reading you can't get from a photograph.

Pull the stick before the test drive, while the seller is still talking. Read the level, look at the color in daylight rather than under the hood shadow, smell it, feel it. Then open the filler cap and look at the underside and down into the head — sludge is visible there before it reaches a stick.

Then ask the question the dipstick can't answer: what specification of oil this engine takes, and whether that's what has been going into it. That specification is in the owner's manual, it is not interchangeable on modern engines, and on a turbocharged or filter-equipped vehicle it is load-bearing. A seller who knows it without looking has told you something about the last few years of that car's life.
